Vinalhaven information for the Healthy Water, Healthy Aging project.
Vinalhaven, located off of Rockland in Midcoast Maine, is the largest island in the Fox Islands. Now part of Knox County, Vinalhaven is the traditional territory of the Red Paint People and the Abenaki people. Vinalhaven has a strong history with the granite industry and now supports a robust fishing community, particularly lobstering. Vinalhaven supports Maine’s largest unbridged island school with nearly 200 students. Vinalhaven is served by the Maine State Ferry Service. Notably, Vinalhaven can be recognized by its wind turbines, which provide a renewable energy source for the island as well as neighboring North Haven. The year-round population is over 1,000 and is a thriving summer destination as well.
