Peaks Island information for the Healthy Water, Healthy Aging project.

Peaks Island, located a short ferry ride away from Portland, is home to the largest of the Casco Bay island communities. Now a neighborhood of Portland, Peaks Island is the traditional territory of the Wabanaki people. Peaks Island has a year-round population of about 900 residents, thousands more coming each year to see the island’s beauty and rich history. This is not a new phenomenon for Peaks, as it has been a beloved tourist attraction for ages, even earning the nickname “Coney Island of Maine”. During World War II, Peaks Island also played a key role in fortifying the Maine coast. Peaks Island’s proximity to the mainland allows residents to access a diversity of occupations and services, allowing folks to participate in small island community and the hustle and bustle of the city.
