Monhegan

Monhegan information for the Healthy Water, Healthy Aging project.

Monhegan, located in the Penobscot Bay, is a famous haven for artists, birders, and whimsical vacation seekers. Now part of Lincoln County, Monhegan is the traditional territory of the Abenaki people. Continuing this long history of community on Monhegan, many accept this island to be the first place to be settled in Maine. Monhegan has a large seasonal fluctuation in population, home to around 70 year-round residents, but seeing thousands in the warmer months. While much of Monhegans economy is tied to this seasonal tourism, fishing is still a large part of the culture and livelihoods here. Interestingly, Monhegan has an inverse fishing season that runs during the winter instead of summer months. Despite its small size, Monhegan sports miles of beautiful trails, some even cohabited by fairy houses.
